SECoopera's cooperation in Bolivia for cardiovascular health care and Chagas disease

Spanish Society of Cardiology

Bolivia

The SECoopera project in Bolivia, led by the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC), aims to improve cardiovascular care in the country, with a particular focus on Chagas disease and pacemaker implantation.

Main Activities of the Project:

  1. Online Training: Specialized courses in cardiovascular pathology and echocardiography are offered to local doctors and nursing staff. This training strengthens the capabilities of Bolivian healthcare professionals, enabling them to effectively diagnose and treat various heart diseases.
  2. Teleconsultation: Through specialized consultations, support is provided to local doctors, and remote patient care is facilitated. To date, over 277 cases have been analyzed in periodic meetings, improving clinical decision-making and patient care.
  3. Pacemaker Implantation: A specific mission for pacemaker implantation is carried out in collaboration with the Bolivian NGO Puente de Solidaridad. This organization plays a crucial role in the project’s logistics and operations, ensuring transportation and accommodation for the medical team, coordinating with local healthcare personnel, and preparing patients who require interventions.

Specific Objectives of the Project:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of Chagas disease: Since Bolivia is one of the most affected regions by this disease, the project focuses on identifying and treating heart conditions associated with it, improving patients’ quality of life.
  • Pacemaker implantation: The goal is to perform mass pacemaker implantation in a one-week collaborative effort with local doctors, with an estimated average of three interventions per day. This joint effort aims to reduce waiting lists and provide timely care for patients in need.
  • Strengthening local capacities: Through training and teleconsultation, the project seeks to empower Bolivian healthcare professionals, equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to face cardiology challenges independently and sustainably.

Conclusion:

The SECoopera project in Bolivia is a comprehensive initiative that combines training, technical assistance, and specialized medical procedures. Its focus on collaborating with local organizations and strengthening internal capacities ensures sustainability and a positive impact on Bolivia’s cardiovascular health.
